Bioengineered Skin Tissues and Their Medical Importance
نویسنده
چکیده
When I was in my 9 th grade biology class, my teacher showed us a video about artificial organ development because we had been talking about stem cell research. The part of the video that intrigued me most was how life-like the organs were. Since watching the video, I have been interested in artificial organ creation, more specifically artificial skin development. I am interested in artificial skin development because it plays an important role in our society by allowing us to more effectively treat skin trauma, such as severe burns, along with providing a new research medium.

Gamma-irradiated human skin allograft: a potential treatment modality for lower extremity ulcers.
Gamma-irradiated human skin allograft consists of epidermis and dermis. Unlike bioengineered tissues which require cold storage and timely use once received from the manufacturer, gamma-irradiated human skin allograft can be stored for as long as 24 months at room temperature. This modality is applied in a fashion similar to that of bioengineered skin grafts. In this article, we present case st...
متن کاملBioengineered Skin from Stem Cells for Treatment of Cutaneous Vesicant Injury
Sulfur mustard is a chemical warfare agent and potent vesicant that penetrates rapidly through the skin and causes prolonged injuries and incapacitation. Severe exposure to HD induces blistering skin reactions and significant loss of stem cell keratinocytes that are required for a continuous renewal of the epidermal cell layer. Therefore, HD injuries require long healing periods leaving signifi...
متن کاملFully functional hair follicle regeneration through the rearrangement of stem cells and their niches
Organ replacement regenerative therapy is purported to enable the replacement of organs damaged by disease, injury or aging in the foreseeable future. Here we demonstrate fully functional hair organ regeneration via the intracutaneous transplantation of a bioengineered pelage and vibrissa follicle germ. The pelage and vibrissae are reconstituted with embryonic skin-derived cells and adult vibri...
متن کاملAcellular bovine-derived matrix used on a traumatic crush injury of the hand: a case study.
Wound care options that provide quality care at a reasonable cost are integral to limb salvage and everyday treatment approaches in patients with traumatic injuries and nonhealing, chronic wounds. Human skin substitutes, or bioengineered tissues, have been available for many years but data about the use, safety, and effectiveness of bovine-derived bioengineered products are limited. A 50-year o...
متن کامل[Skin bioengineering: preclinical and clinical applications].
Regenerative Medicine is an emerging field that combines basic research and clinical observations in order to identify the elements required to replace damaged tissues and organs in vivo and to stimulate the body's intrinsic regenerative capacity. Great benefits are expected in this field as researchers take advantage of the potential regenerative properties of both embryonic and adult stem cel...
